The Temple at Shoshoni Yoga Retreat

Shambhava School of Yoga-

  Midland TX

A Shambhava Yoga Center

A student of yoga can be completely immersed in the world while maintaining, first and foremost, a strong spiritual life. Life's circumstances are viewed as fuel for spiritual growth. We can open to and encompass the challenges, hardships, and joys of day to day living and transform everything into food for the spirit.  Swami Rudrananda (Rudi), taught that "Spiritual work is the only true democracy."

What is Hatha Yoga?  How Do Yoga and Meditation Relate?

The word "yoga" is Sanskrit (a language even older than Latin) which means "union." In the practice of yoga, the student works to unite with her/his concept of spirit through a calm mind and disciplined body. In the East, it is generally practiced in conjunction with certain philosophies and religions, while in the West, it is usually used to tone body and mind through concentration and physical activity. Yoga has been scientifically proven to reduce stress and to help the body heal from the effects of stress-induced illness, both physical and mental. When working with yoga, all of the systems of the body, plus the muscles and bones, are being toned. Specific physical conditions can greatly benefit from programs designed for the individual.

Although the effects of yoga on the body can be both toning and stress-reducing, the original purpose of yoga is to prepare the body to eventually sit for long periods in meditation.  With an inner focus, the mind becomes calm, the emotions soothed, and the body quiet. Meditation is a true inner exploration.  Meditation classes teach you how to focus your thoughts until you have complete control of your mind.  With this control comes an awareness that you are not the roles you live each day, but you are part of a larger spiritual aspect that exists right now within you.  You will work for short periods with various breathing techniques that are proven exercises in the development of your perfect self control.  As your mind is brought into focus, your body changes due to the lessening of daily stressful effects, which increases the depth of your yoga practice.  Then, you will be able to sit for longer periods as it is comfortable for you.  It is a gradual practice, but it is a practice that you will joyfully anticipate as you grow and develop.

There are many kinds of yoga. Hatha yoga is a gentler practice of movement through a series of postures designed to reduce stress, increase physical stamina and flexibility, and give the student a sense of confidence and self-assurance. The basis for all yogic practice is the proper use of breathing, the techniques of which are numerous and varied. Once these techniques are learned, students are able to use them not only to ease into yoga postures more efficiently and effectively, but to take what is learned in class, work with it throughout the day, and more easily cope with the stresses of daily life.

You may have seen pictures of experienced teachers and students in advanced postures. It takes many hours of study to achieve these postures and most people do not have the time available to devote to this much practice!  You will make progress, even with one class per week. The important thing in the beginning is to do the postures properly and to learn to use the breathing techniques as you work with the postures. Flexibility and stamina will come in time along with self-awareness and without competition with other students.

Most importantly, through meditation, yogic breathing and the gentle postures of hatha yoga, students can regain their authority over their bodies, their minds, and even their lives. Rather than responding to stressful situations with tension and negativity, through their own inner strength, students can respond with reason and calm.  Meditation and yogic breathing can be used throughout the day - in traffic, in the office, at home - and it can make a profound difference in the student's - in your - outlook on life!
